Spot the Dog (by Neal McLain)

Doug McLain, Spot the Dog and Neal McLain (R to L)

Poor “Spot” (or “Spottie Ringtail”) as we sometimes called her. I often think of her. During WWII our family was living at Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) in Maryland. Our dad, Stuart Mclain, was a Major in the U.S. Army. I don’t know his job was but it was important to the war effort. He must have worked 80+ hours per week. My brother Doug and I were in grade school. In 1942, our mom needed some sort of surgery so Doug and I went to live with relatives in Michigan. We essentially abandoned poor Spot. I can only imagine what her life would have been. We heard from a neighbor that she used to return daily to our former home. But we weren’t there. Sometimes I wonder why our parents didn’t let us bring Spot along with us when we went to live with those relatives in Michigan. But I’m sure they had their reasons. The entire country was devoted to winning the war in Europe. Only my Dad remained at APG. I guess he just didn’t have time to feed poor Spot. This is not the first time I’ve written this story, but even now, as I write, it brings tears to my eyes.
